CaptureDisc™ Basic: Turn Any Camera Into a Measurable 3D Scanner
Photographic 3D scanning used to mean spending hundreds — or thousands — on dedicated hardware. CaptureDisc™ Basic changes that. At $14.99, it's a 6-inch passive reference disc that gives your phone or camera everything it needs to produce clean, measurable 3D captures — no expensive scanner required.
Here's what it is, who it's built for, and what you can do with it.
What Is CaptureDisc™ Basic?
CaptureDisc™ Basic is a precision reference disc developed in collaboration with Optml 360. When you place a small object on it and shoot — with a turntable, handheld, or in a studio setup — the disc acts as a landmark for your reconstruction software. It gives the software accurate pose, scale, and geometry cues so the resulting 3D model comes out cleaner, more consistent, and genuinely measurable.
It unlocks three capabilities in the Optml 360 app automatically:
- CaptureScale — real-world measurements from day one. Accurate to 0.01 cm on a ring-sized object under good conditions.
- CaptureMesh (coming soon) — downloadable mesh files for 3D printing and further editing, free with every disc.
- CaptureMatch (coming later) — color-reference processing for consistent, true-to-life color results.
There's nothing to pair and no special mode to switch on. Keep the disc in frame while you shoot — the Optml 360 app recognizes it automatically.
Who Should Use CaptureDisc™ Basic?
Ecommerce Sellers and Product Photographers
If you're selling products online and want 360° spin photography or an embeddable 3D viewer on your listings, CaptureDisc™ gives you a purpose-built workflow from the phone or camera you already own. No dedicated scanner. No complicated setup. Just place the object on the disc and shoot.
Jewelers and Jewelry Designers
CaptureScale turns a captured scan into a true-to-size 3D result with real measurements — height, depth, and width accurate enough for ring sizing, client presentations, and archiving custom work. If a piece needs to be replicated or quoted, you'll have the data.
Makers and 3D Printing Enthusiasts
Capture small prints, props, miniatures, or collectibles and feed them into your existing pipeline. CaptureDisc also improves results in Jawset PostShot, LichtFeld Studio, Agisoft Metashape, RealityCapture, and RealityScan — you're not locked into one app. And when CaptureMesh launches, you'll be able to download print-ready mesh files directly.
Photographers Expanding Into 3D
If you already shoot product photography, the transition is nearly frictionless. Place the object on the disc, record normally, and let the software handle alignment and scale. CaptureScale and augmented-reality support are ready from day one — no new skills required.
Collectors and Archivists
Document figurines, small artifacts, and collectibles with accurate measurements and a shareable 3D result — without the cost or complexity of a lab-grade scanner. A detailed bird figurine, a vintage toy, a handmade ceramic — anything that fits on a 6-inch disc is a candidate.
What Can You Use It For?
- Ecommerce 360° product photography and 3D product viewers
- Photo-based 3D scanning and photogrammetry
- 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) capture
- Ring sizing and jewelry measurement
- Archiving collectibles, miniatures, and small artifacts
- Scan-to-print workflows (via CaptureMesh, coming soon)
- Augmented-reality product visualization
How Does It Work?
Two capture styles, one disc:
On a turntable: Place the object and disc together and record a full rotation — as little as 30 seconds. A solid-color studio background and a slow rotation (30+ seconds per revolution) give the sharpest frames. The disc and object rotate as one trackable subject.
Handheld: Leave the object and disc in place and move smoothly around them with your camera. No turntable or specific background required — good for larger objects or quick captures on location.
Once you upload the footage to Optml 360, the app detects the disc automatically and routes it through the enhanced processing path. CaptureScale measurements and AR support are available immediately.
How Does It Compare to a Dedicated Scanner?
A dedicated device like the Creality PIKA runs $699 list. CaptureDisc™ Basic is $14.99 — and uses the phone or camera you already own.
The tradeoffs are honest: the PIKA produces printable mesh files today, while CaptureMesh is coming soon for CaptureDisc™. But for 360° ecommerce photography, real-world measurements, Gaussian Splatting (PIKA: coming soon), and augmented reality, CaptureDisc™ delivers from day one at a fraction of the price.
For most makers, sellers, and photographers, the choice is straightforward: buy a $699 scanner, or spend $14.99 and use the camera already in your pocket.
