Product Description
Product Description
ABS Strength. UV Resistance. Built for the Outdoors.
If you've ever printed a part in ABS and left it outside — on a car, a fence, a rooftop, a boat — you already know what happens. The UV degrades it. The color fades. The surface becomes chalky. Over time, it becomes brittle and loses its mechanical properties, even if it looked fine off the build plate.
ASA was engineered to solve exactly that. Polymaker PolyLite ASA is almost chemically identical to ABS — same strength, same heat resistance, same printability — with one crucial difference: exceptional resistance to UV light and environmental stress cracking. While ABS degrades in the sun, ASA holds up. Color stays true. Mechanical properties stay intact. The part keeps doing its job, season after season.
There's a secondary benefit too: ASA prints with a natural matte finish that slightly softens the appearance of layer lines, giving parts a cleaner, more refined look straight off the build plate compared to the glossier surface of standard ABS.
Do I need an enclosure? For smaller prints — roughly fist-sized or under — an enclosure isn't strictly required. For larger parts, an enclosure becomes increasingly important for dimensional stability and preventing warping if you're printing big. Plan for an enclosed machine.
The outdoor filament of choice — perfect for:
- Automotive exterior parts, mirror housings, trim pieces, and under-hood mounts
- Outdoor enclosures, mounting brackets, and weatherproof fixture housings
- Garden tools, irrigation fittings, and outdoor furniture hardware
- RC car bodies, drone frames, and outdoor vehicle components
- Rooftop and solar panel mounting hardware exposed to direct sun
- Marine and boating accessories
- Signage, nameplates, and outdoor display components
- Any functional print that lives outside and needs to keep performing
Printer Compatibility: Compatible with most 1.75mm FDM 3D printers. An enclosure is recommended for prints larger than fist-sized.
Key Properties
- Material: ASA — Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate
- Key Advantage: Superior UV resistance and environmental stress crack resistance vs ABS. Suitable for long-term outdoor and weather-exposed applications
- vs ABS: Near-identical mechanical properties and printability. ASA adds UV/weather resistance and a natural matte finish
- Finish: Matte — subtly hides layer lines compared to standard ABS
- Enclosure: Recommended for parts larger than fist-sized. Smaller prints may not require one
